The ASM Information Retrieval System is currently in process of redesign to incorporate major refinements and improvements resulting from five years of operating experience as well as experience and research of others in the field. Principles and methodology underlying these changes are explored for various components of this system, principally vocabulary, links and roles, and computer hardware and programming. The major change is from semantic code to thesaurus as the system vocabulary, and the relative efficiencies and inherent capabilities of each are compared and related to the general principles of vocabulary control.

This was compiled as a special report by Edwin Castagna, president of the ALA, 1964–5, and a one‐day workshop on the findings was presented in Detroit. It is a ‘first effort’ to assess what is needed in dollars to bring the national level of library service up to the standards set by ALA divisions in the areas of stock, professional staff, and operating expenditures. Six thousand dollars was used as an average beginning salary for new librarians. The coverage is restricted to school libraries, academic libraries, and public libraries. The state of graduate library education is also shown. Some conclusions drawn from the findings included the need for re‐examination and re‐evaluation of the standards of various types of libraries: the need to gather more uniform statistics and clearer definitions of roles and responsibilities. Tables are given, including details of expenditure grouped by state, and also a breakdown of the stock and numbers of professional staff with comparison against required standards.

The present paper is intended to form an introduction to the ideas of machine translation; it is in no sense a complete account of the work which has been carried out at Birkbeck College and elsewhere and which interested readers can study in more detail in a book which is in course of publication.

The following classified, annotated list of titles is intended to provide reference librarians with a current checklist of new reference books, and is designed to supplement the RSR review column, “Recent Reference Books,” by Frances Neel Cheney. “Reference Books in Print” includes all additional books received prior to the inclusion deadline established for this issue. Appearance in this column does not preclude a later review in RSR. Publishers are urged to send a copy of all new reference books directly to RSR as soon as published, for immediate listing in “Reference Books in Print.” Reference books with imprints older than two years will not be included (with the exception of current reprints or older books newly acquired for distribution by another publisher). The column shall also occasionally include library science or other library related publications of other than a reference character.

In 1953, Mr P. E. Colinese contributed to Aslib Proceedings a paper explaining why the British Iron and Steel Research Association had adopted the ASM/SLA Metallurgical Literature Classification to deal with its research reports.

The Symposium on Systems for Information Retrieval was held in Cleveland, Ohio, from 15 to 17 April, 1957 under the sponsorship of the School of Library Science, Western Reserve University, and the Council on Documentation Research.
